Debating and Literary Society of Government Law College, fondly known as 'DebSoc' is a committee striving to create and promote the culture of debating and the importance of literature among the students of the college. The committee seeks to provide a platform for the budding law students to involve themselves in intense dialogue and discussion over any topic under the Sun, along with its regular debate practice sessions which aim at honing their oratory and logical reasoning skills. In order to further its agenda, the committee organises two flagship events round the year.

The Policy Conclave being one of the two provides a platform to hear out experts debating over issues of prime importance followed by an intriguing Q&A round with the students. The committee also organised the inaugural edition of Nishith Desai Parliamentary Debate Global Competition in 2016 which not only aimed at strengthening the debating culture in the college but also embedded GLC in the prevelant debating circuit. Initiatives such as Book Club, Round Ups, Movie Screenings, and Discussions fall among the regular activities of DebSoc which aim to achieve the perfect equilibrium of knowledge and recreation in the college.

The Gujarati Mandal endeavours to promote the Gujarati culture by celebrating festivals such as 'Makar Sankranti' and 'Navratri'.

Hindi Parishad of Government Law College was formed with an aim for promoting the Hindi language and the culture it brings along. Hindi Parishad has been actively promoting Hindi and providing a platform for the students of vernacular background to develop and promote their culture.

This year, Hindi Parishad began with CV Making workshop in collaboration with student’s council. With the aim to help the fresher’s with the format and the essentials of good curriculum vitiate. On the eve of Hindi Divas which falls on September 14th, an Essay Writing and Poetry Competition were organized. Other event of this year was Hindi moot workshop.

Hindi Parishad has also encouraged students to take part in inter college fests and few students even won prices for their poems at inter college level.

Established under the privileged guidance of Former CJI Justice Y.V. Chandrachud, the GLC Law Review has come a long way since its inception, through its 8 editions. Currently headed by Dr. Justice D. Y. Chandrachud, Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court, the Committee provides a platform for students to hone their literary and research skills. The Law Review releases a Students Edition as well as a Bench Edition, the latter containing articles written by members of the judiciary.

Legal Aid Committee has varied and diverse activities to be undertaken which range from providing pro bono legal opinion to needy people, spreading awareness in Mumbai on various current socio-legal issues, teaching juvenile delinquents and writing bail applications for the prison inmates. Committee is comprised of four avenues namely Legal Aid Cell, Legal Awareness Cell, Dongri Juvenile Home Visits and Jail Visits. The year starts with ANNUAL INTRA COMMITTEE PRESENTATION COMPETITION. New members in the committee participate in the competition in a team of 7-8 members and present their views on the topic assigned. The topics are current socio-legal issues.

LEGAL AID CELL

1. We provide Pro Bono Legal Opinion to people in need. The matters are related to family law, property law, labour law and criminal law.
2. We conduct an Intra-College Competition 'Expressions' in collaboration with Majlis on women Centric Issues.
3. We take the committee members for Lokadalat Session in the High Court of Bombay where they witness the hearing of various cases and get firsthand experience of the procedure in Lokadalat.
4. Members involve themselves in Writing Articles on current socio-legal issues in a group of 7-8 students. They discuss and analyze the issues, work in teams and thereafter write articles which are published on the Legal Aid group on Facebook
5. We associated with Resource Cell for Juvenile Justice of Tata Institute of Social Sciences for an internship programme, open to the students of the college. Students volunteered for Help Desk Legal Intervention set up in Observation Homes which helped them in understanding of implementation of the laws and procedures.well
6. We collaborated with the Legal Aid Clinics of Law Schools like NLSIU Bangalore, Christ University etc. [Indian Legal Awareness & Aid Network (ILAAN)] with an aim to provide legal aid and awareness in a unified manner across the whole country.

DONGRI JUVENILE HOME

1. Interactive sessions are conducted for the juvenile delinquents on moral..
2. Functions are organized for festivals like Ganapati Celebration and Republic Day where juveniles actively take part by the medium of skit, dance and songs.
3. Juveniles are also Taught Elementary Mathematics and members of the committee conduct Drawing Competition for the juveniles.
4. Certified Vocational Training course was introduced for juveniles in collaboration with Yuva Parivartan. They were taught mobile repairing for one month.

LEGAL AWARENESS CELL

1. Committee organizes and members attend Various Workshops on Socio-Legal Issues like Right to Information, Garbage Disposal, Alcoholism, Human Trafficking in various schools, colleges, public places.
2. Members perform in the Street Play and spread awareness in various parts of Mumbai ranging from slums to stations on the issues like Eve Teasing, Right to Safety.
3. We conduct Awareness Campaigns in collaboration with various NGOs through Street plays on issues like Importance of Education in collaboration with various NGOs like Child Rights and You(CRY).
4. Saturday School Programme is organised in collaboration with Smile Foundation in the slums of Dharavi where students of Standard 3rd to 9th are taught English and Mathematics.

JAIL VISITS

1. We believe in welfare and serving the society as well as helping the budding lawyers. Final year students of the college undergo a practical training session where they visit the prison, meet the prison inmates and analyze Judicial Department Records and Draft Bail Application for the inmates. The Committee conducts jail visits to the major prisons in Mumbai namely Arthur Road Central Prison and Byculla Prison. We conduct a Bail Application Workshop prior to the visit.
   
   At the year end, we organize annual INTRA COLLEGE QUIZ COMPETITION. The quiz has two preliminary rounds and the final round. It tests the legal aptitude and general knowledge of the participants. It has unique rounds like Dumb-Charades, Audio-Visual and Treasure Hunt. The organization and participation makes it a memorable experience.

Leo Club of Government Law College is a youth organisation of Lions Club International. The word L E O stands for Leadership, Experience, Opportunity.

The Leo club conducts service activities, educational Projects, cultural activities, workshops and seminars, youth convention and council meets which develops the individual qualities of Leadership, Experience and Opportunity, to unite its members in friendship, fellowship and mutual understanding. The Leo Club Program gives young people the opportunity to serve their communities and make a positive impact.

We started our year 2015-16 with the Motto ‘In Pursuit of Excellence’. This year continuing the legacy and holding onto Leoism and its importance, the LEO CLUB of Government Law College had organised various events.

October Service Week was the most prominent event of the year. A Free Medical Check-up camp was organised in College.We had also organised various Blood Donation Camps , Organ Donation Drive and N.G.O. Visits. In Other events, were Salute to Saviours- an event to appreciate the Policemen for their endless service and Chronicle’15 - an intellectual based event where the participants connected psychology and law , The concluding event of the service week was a Seminar on cyber crime.

We had also organised a Lecture on the Basic Civil Procedures of court followed by a High Court visit. The Leo club of Government Law College had gone for the 1st Multiple Council Meet —‘SHANKHNAAD’ to Khanvel Resort, Silvassa .Lastly, the year ended with a Christmas Party for under privileged kids and a Box Cricket Tournament- CRIKOUT’16.

The Magazine Committee is one of the oldest committees of the college. Since its inception in 1930, the annual publication, méLAWnge, has given voice to students’ views, and touched upon issues that matter – in India, and around the world. MéLAWnge contains articles and interviews from the greatest legal luminaries of our nation, to experts from varied fields, and our very own students.

The magazine is circulated amongst dignitaries in Delhi such as the President of India, Chief Justice of India, Minister of Law & Justice, Supreme Court of India and Bombay High Court Judges, Law firms in Mumbai and Delhi, Senior Counsel and Counsels in Mumbai, all the students and faculty of GLC, as well as all law colleges across India. This year, the committee conducted its flagship event – Knock Out! – A debate deliberating the deleterious effects of the death penalty in India. The Magazine Committee organised its three annual essay writing competitions to encourage the spirit of literary excellence amongst students in GLC and across India: The Vyas GLC National Legal Essay Competition, Belles Lettres: J.E. Dastur Memorial GLC Short Fiction Essay Writing Competition, and the Sir Dinshah Mulla Legal Essay Writing Competition.

The GLC MUN Society aims to educate students about the advantages of MUNning (an internationally recognized form of debate, discussion and deliberation.)The Society assists the students and facilitates greater participation of the students of GLC at various City, National and International MUN Conferences, and officially selects and sends contingents from college to these Conferences. The activities of the Society involve young people in the study and discussion of global issues, and encourage the development of useful skills such as research, writing, public speaking, problem solving, consensus building, conflict resolution and cooperation.

Since its inception in 1954, the MCA is committed to promote, co-ordinate and encourage the activity of mooting at GLC. The primary objective of the MCA is to provide student of GLC with a platform to gain exposure to the practical aspects of legal education. The MCA organizes some of the most prestigious moots in the country.

The Music Circle aims to provide a platform to those who are passionate about Music. It is devoted to motivate students to pursue Music as an important extra-curricular activity. It co-ordinates the participation of students from GLC in various music events at various inter-collegiate fests like Mood Indigo, Malhar, Sympulse, etc.

The National Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS comes under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Govt. of India and is launched in Gandhiji's Birth Centenary (100th) Year 1969 to primarily focus on the development of personality of students through community service.

We, the GLC NSS unit, a unit comprising of about 50 active volunteers, welcome anyone who is ready to venture out of his/her comfort zones and make a difference to the society.

The NSS motto "NOT ME BUT YOU", abided by all of us, NSS members, reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service. It prompts you to develop appreciation to the other person's point of view and also show consideration to other living beings as you inculcate the undying lively spirit within yourself to provide welfare.

The NSS symbol has been emanated from the giant Rath wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa, India. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release - indeed implying the continuous striving of NSS for social change. While the 8 bars represent 24 hours of a day, their red colour signifies the lively, active, young blood of the volunteer - full of high spirit. The Navy blue colour indicates that the NSS unit is tiny but considerable part of the cosmos to work for welfare of mankind.

Some of the main objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are :-
i. understand the community in which they work
ii. understand themselves in relation to their community
iii. utilise their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
iv. practise national integration and social harmony

And in practice, we, the GLC NSS members, become arguably the closest and the friendliest people who care for each other as we travel together to the places, our University calls, or the places our unit has adopted.

A prestigious regular NSS certificate is issued by the NSS cell of the University of Mumbai if a NSS volunteer successfully completes 240 hours of regular NSS activities selflessly during their academic duration and participates in one special residential camps.

The Placement Committee acts as a vital intermediary between the students of our college and prestigious institutions, firms, corporates and counsels of the country.The Placement Committee is one of the most important committees, shouldering the responsibility of providing a stepping stone to budding lawyers graduating from Government Law College. The committee aims at exhausting all existing opportunities of recruitment in the form of law firms, counsels, LPOs and corporate houses. It acts as a link between the recruiters and students, thereby fulfilling the needs of both. It enables the students to get placements on campus, hence making placements a lot easier for them. The members of the Placement Committee take it upon themselves to ensure that maximum students from the college get placements, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their skills.

The committee successfully organizes two placement weeks annually, one being in the month of September for the positions of intern, articled clerk and associate, and the other in the month of February for the position of associate. The Committee draws up a database of students, invites recruiters from across the country for on and off Campus Placements and organizes pre-placement talks. Although the Annual Placement Weeks witness the largest quantum of recruitment opportunities, the Committee functions throughout the year and co-ordinates the recruitment process at every available opportunity and offer.

The Rotaract Club of GLC is a unit of the Rotary International, an international organization at the forefront of social service and societal development. The Rotract Club aims at the overall development of its members. To achieve this end, it undertakes various social service initiatives, personality development initiatives as well as entertainment and fun events for its members. It organises "The Charity Sale" in association with several NGOs to provide a platform to the under-privileged to showcase their talent and products and market them to a wide audience.

Simply put, the Sports Committee of Government Law College, Mumbai makes available to students opportunities for the instruction and participation in a wide range of sporting activities throughout the year. With established teams of Football, Basketball, Cricket, Badminton, Table Tennis and Athletics, to name a few, the committee nurtures a passion for sports and provides an opportunity to all such students to represent the college. Given the number of talented sportspersons at our disposal, an active Sports Committee is integral in allowing the same to continue their passion as well as proudly represent the College in the same. The committee ensures participation from GLC in various sports fests across the country, throughout the year..

Smt. Vinatadevi Tope Tope Social Service League(also known as SSL or the League) is one of the oldest and most prestigious student committees of Government Law College, Mumbai. The league was founded in 1966 by then Principal Dr. Trimbak Krishna Tope, in the fond memory of his late wife, Smt. Vinatadevi Tope. Dr. Tope laid the foundation stone of Smt. Vinatadevi Tope Social Service League in the year 1966, also serving as its first and longest serving President, from 1966 to 1975. SSL is one of the four oldest student committees of Government Law College, Mumbai (the other three being the Moot Court Association, the Magazine Committee and the Sports Committee). It is also the only committee whose President was also the Principal of Government Law College.

SPIL, Mumbai was born in furtherance of a desire to understand the tumultuous nature of International Relations. SPIL seeks to promote a greater awareness and appreciation of International Law and provides opportunities for the comprehensive study of International cultures and legal systems. SPIL organizes Workshops and informative Paper Presentations on the basics of International Law, interpretation of judgements and issues pertaining to emerging trends in International Law. It is associated with the Indian Society of International Law (ISIL) and is a chapter of the International Law Students' Association (ILSA). It's flagship event, the GLC International Law Summit, is an eclectic mix of key note addresses, lectures, and two competitions unique to the Summit - the Treaty Appreciation Competition, and the International Judgment Deliberation Competition.

Urdu is one of the officially recognized languages in India. Urdu is soulful language of love & Urdu literature has always served the purpose of a mirror of the society. With an aim to create opportunities for connecting all of us as secular human being Bazm-e-Urdu was set up as a committee in Government Law College in 1995, to provide a platform for the promotion of Urdu Language & Culture.The Inaugural function of “Bazm-e-Urdu” was held on 3rd February, 2016 and was inaugurated by Chief Guest Mr.Quaiser Khalid (I.P.S) - Additional Commissioner of Police, Arms & Ammunition, Mumbai and Guest of Honour : Mr.Sarfaraz Arzu - Chief Editor Hindustan Urdu Daily under the Presidency of Prof. Prakash K.Mokal, Chairperson - Prof. Nuzhat Shaikh & General Secretary - Abdul Mannan P. Ansari for the year 2015-16. Bazm-e- Urdu also took the initiative of conducting Lectures to teach “Urdu” in college & it was Inaugurated by Principal Shri.Pramod D. Ambekar on 20th February, 2016 which was attended not only by the students but non teaching staff and Professors of the college who were keen to learn Urdu and keeping in mind the zeal & enthusiasm of the Learners Urdu lectures will continue in College to accomplish the aim to promote, develop & propagate Urdu language..
